The Poetry Leadership Fellowship is a global learning community where young people study language, practice leadership, and build work that matters to the communities they call home.
Young people already carry knowledge shaped by family, language, place, and experience. Their development should not require them to leave that knowledge behind.
We provide the time, mentorship, and technical instruction to help fellows examine what they know, communicate it with precision, and bring it into public life. Poetry is central to this work because it trains attention: to words, to people, and to the consequences of how we speak.
To use language well is to understand that words have weight, audiences have memory, and leadership carries responsibility.
Writing a poem requires choices about language, rhythm, structure, and audience. Fellows learn to revise what they mean, listen for what they have missed, and speak so that others can understand the stakes of an idea.
Communities have long used poetry, oral history, and storytelling to preserve memory, question power, and pass knowledge between generations. Fellows enter the program with traditions and experiences of their own. The fellowship gives those differences room to meet without reducing them to a single story.
We envision equitable access to global leadership for young people from resource-constrained settings, with the authority, clarity, and support to stand alongside their peers and shape the decisions that affect their lives.
Through writing, public speaking, dialogue, and community care, we equip fellows to communicate with precision, make thoughtful judgments, and lead with ethical responsibility. Poetry provides the discipline through which this work begins.
